A deeply intellectual history of the present, The Decline of Democratic Society in the New Age outlines the historical events that have led the world into its current state of political, economic, psychological, societal, and biological demise. By identifying and discussing tyranny in its modern forms, solutions are made evident or provided throughout the text. Abounding with original ideas in every one of its thirty chapters, the book is a model of revolutionary thought and philosophical totality. It constitutes no less than a modern day version of Plato’s Republic for the new century. Beyond this, the text possesses an unceasing intensity of tone found only in the purest of political tracts. Without doubt an intellectual, political, and historical necessity in this confused and disturbing period.

Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Giovanni Soriano received his Bachelors Degree from the University of Toronto. As academic institutions can never provide one with the perception and insight  that authorship requires, though, Giovanni has spent much of his life in activities related to emotional and intellectual development. This has prepared him for a career in writing original, avantgarde books that probe the human condition. He currently lives in Italy. Please note, this G. Soriano is not the Italian author of Malomondo. That is a completely different person.

Reviews and Excerpts:

I will start by saying this is an excellently-written, highly informative book! As a poli-sci and econ major in college, I have read several books on these sorts of topics (capitalism, western attitudes/ideals/global socio-economic influences and patterns, etc., etc…) but  oftentimes I get the sense that most are just recycling old information, or pushing an agenda to suit the author’s personal ideals. Well, for this book it seems like I read a lot of new ideas presented in a way that makes a great deal of sense. A lot of the content was (mostly) new to me and laid out in a simple way that is easy to follow. Giovanni Soriano uses historical examples and present day conditions- globally and domestically- as well as facts and real life  examples to share his perspectives and his ideas for improving western capitalist systems, and demonstrating its inherent flaws. He gives straightforward, useful advice that anyone can (and should) thoughtfully consider. Nicely laid out and I liked how it was formatted/broken down into shorter chapters. Made for quick reading and easy retention. Flawless editing, and I walked away feeling like I really learned something from reading this book. – Cale Owens ***** (5 stars)

I really enjoyed reading The Decline of Democratic Society in the New Age by Giovanni Soriano. When I was in university, I took a lot of pol sci classes. I like history a lot and pol sci offered history plus a little something extra; tools of analysis. In many ways, The Decline of Democratic Society in the New Age reminds me of Lenin’s critique of capitalism. They are both insightful looks at the society, political system, and economic system in which we live. I found this book full of plausible answers to questions I have asked myself as I observe the accomplishments and failures of democracy in the United States today. Every curious, educated citizen who wants to get an idea of where our democracy is going , and how we may influence its direction, will be interested in what Giovanni Soriano has to say.

I have a little background in reading political pieces, but I think anyone with a good education can understand and enjoy this book, no matter their field of study. It is well written and easy to understand, even though it sometimes deals with complex issues. It is organized in a way that helps to explain the terms and concepts as the book progresses. The tone is neither condescending nor lecturing, but a plain, straightforward laying out of ideas. I liked this book. Even though I did not agree with every idea or conclusion, I found myself with a great respect for Giovanni Soriano when I was finished. – Ray Simmons of Readers Favorite **** (4 stars)

I never felt lost or confused while reading this, in fact I really felt like I learned many things I didn’t learn in university . . . This book is eye-opening and not without some controversy, I’m sure. But a compelling and relevant read that undoubtedly has merit. – Cody Brighton ***** (4.5 stars)

Well-crafted and with powerful, if not controversial ideas. This is an important book to read, and I wish Mr.Soriano all the best success with it.- John Goldman ***** (5 stars)

I think many will find this book and some of Giovanni’s ideas controversial, but there is no denying that he makes convincing points and backs up his overall thesis with plenty of supporting scenarios from the past, as well as current times. His narrative is easy to follow, even if some of the concepts were admittedly over my head… This book has a lot of ideas that could change the way you think about capitalism and its place in the world- and maybe for the better. – Essie Harmon ***** (4.5 stars)

The title alone grabbed me as it is so relevant and timely. What could possibly be more important than not only improving our rapidly declining democratic society now, but making some changes and ensuring that we not only have a better future for generations to come, but so that we also don’t go the way of many extinct civilizations before us. I applaud Giovanni Soriano’s efforts at artfully breaking down the problems we face in terms of financial and social customs, politics, national and international history, and future issues. He explains his points well and even offers some solutions that are easy enough to understand for a layman without “dumbing it down”, but realizing that the problems are complex and not easily or quickly turned around. However, he has some brilliant ideas that would be interesting to see put into use. In theory many of the concepts presented in this book seem like they could indeed be a positive force that could help our society from going the way of many failed ones before it (if it isn’t already too late for that). I really liked Soriano’s writing style- short, focused chapters on a wide range of topics and with clean editing and a nice flow. This isn’t a very long book but it is loaded with information that is provocative and eye-opening. It is clear he has done his research and I could see this being read in college classes. Definitely recommend. – Jenna Brewster  ***** (5 stars)

The New Kleptocracies: A Repetition of History?

What is going on now in America with President Trump, in Italy, where I live, with the vociferous new Five Star Party, and in an increasing number of other European nations, seems on the face of it to be a resurgence of fascist politics. As is always the case with politics, however, one must look beyond the appearances to ascertain the truth about what is really happening. Nevermind the emotional displays and the rhetoric. Also nevermind the prejudiced media coverage of all this as innocuous, inconsequential entertainment. It may not be. One has to ask what is actually being done by these apparently angry people in power to change things. Nothing. The agendas of the liberal elites go on as usual. The bankrupting of western nations with egregious, historically unprecedented funding of financial markets goes on, immigration and mass migration into western countries goes on (as does media propaganda supporting it), employment opportunity and financial freedom for the ordinary western person continue to deteriorate, etc. Disgruntled voters are being handed nothing but a generous helping of the emperor’s new clothes, amped up performances to assuage their growing disatisfaction. The same people remain in control, but appearances are changed to prevent democratic revolt. Extremist desires were in fact carried out in Britain recently with the Brexit vote, but one must remember that ethnic sensitivities in that part of the world are different from what exists in the rest of the west. Those people feel besieged historically by “Catholic continental types”, not the third world. Even though they could probably be destroyed economically by a vengeful European Union right now, that will not happen because of their toleration for racial minorities. This is what the “liberal” ruling class wants. What voters in America and Europe will receive in actual reality, however, if economic circumstances continue to degenerate for the financial elites, is world war, just as they did in the 1930s. The will of Marxist intellectuals and philosophers might continue to be served with the genocide of yet millions more in the western and European worlds, before international order comes closer to, or is replaced by post western international chaos dominated by a financial-industrial aristocracy.

The U.N. Building in New York- It may be that the U.S., as a traditionally benevolent nation, is not capable of the cold rationality required in the present era to offset economic collapse.

Is this cause for despair? Almost certainly not because the fact is that this post WW2 ideology of liberal leftism has lost all of its power, all of its control over political and economic events. These people are no longer in command of reality. That is why they have been printing obscene amounts of money over the last decade- to keep things going their way, at least superficially. The problem is that this strategy does not work. It did not work for European fascists in the 1930s and it is not working for the descending ideology of today for the simple reason that they have been outclassed, just as they once outclassed their more senior spiritual enemies in Fascist Europe. As a result what may begin to happen now is yet another historical repetition- the provocation to war. This is the next stage down in the cycle of decline. In ancient times, one ethos that governed the behavior of Rome’s rulers throughout its history was that aggression must never be initiated against one’s rivals or even one’s subjects. Attack is a major sign of weakness, of desperation. Military action must always be limited to reaction. This is what enabled them to defeat and wipe out so many cultures over so many centuries. America may not be Rome, but with each passing year it is beginning to look more and more like one of Rome’s irrational enemies. It seems highly unlikely now that any American president or other western leader will take rational measures to deal with failing economies. That would mean suffering for the third world and this is not allowed by the prevailing Marxist philosophies. It is more accurate to say that the racial and economic agendas of the financial elites will not permit any such measures. The third world must rise. One may think that this is all paranoia, that these developed nations are simply too decent to pick on the weak, that there are no agendas at work, just a lack of original thinking or initiative on the part of leadership. The massive flow of public money into private pockets (now no longer reported by American media, and only partially in Europe) over such a long period negates all of this conciliatory thinking. So emotional displays will continue to intensify and become more frequent, until finally the atmosphere is established for beating the war drums. After decades of being weakened by debauchery and drugs, it is also unlikely that the American populace is fit to put a stop to any such developments and save its democracy. The reason for hope today is that if these declining elites manage to lash out and force war upon the west, it will be the last thing they ever do. As surely as their machinations destroy the lives of others, so too will their sick dreams and visions for the world also be destroyed.

NEW BOOK BY GIOVANNI SORIANO                                                                                                                             JUST RELEASED

In this new book, the author examines modern society not through history and theory, as in The Decline of Democratic Society in the New Age, but through drama. Indeed, Equinox One- The Shores of Disillumination is a controversial portrait of modern North American society. Both liberalism and feminism come under the gun in a complex drama that combines serious, analytical commentary with bold comedy. Replete with unique and beautiful images to accentuate the reading experience, Equinox One is the first in a trilogy of plays but can be read on its own without further reference to the ones that follow.

The story involves Hermes, a hedonistic writer trying to survive in an environment very hostile to his personal and professional aspirations. The intellectual aggression of Hermes, however, ensures that the unrelenting waves of decadence never engulf him or his dreams. The play hilights many trends in politics, culture, and human relations that have developed or are currently developing in North America.

Sharp and witty with some excellent one-liners, Soriano not only entertains but leaves us deep in thought and The Shores of Disillumination is highly recommended.

In troubled times it’s more vital than ever that literature fulfils its key role of giving us a broader and more challenging perspective on the world. Begging more than a little controversy, Equinox One- The Shores of Disillumination certainly steps up to the mark with cultural identity, monarchy, capitalism and bigotry all coming in for a drubbing. Capturing the particular strangeness of life in a time where humankind has finally learned enough to destroy itself, Soriano combines acerbic prose and exceptional wit to explore humanity’s more poignant flaws by setting his sights on our inherent failings. Rest assured there are plenty of laughs to be had along the way – “As you eat in excess, drink alcohol, and smoke weed you nourish the world with the negative energy that emanates from your ass” – but through Hermes and his disillusionment we are reminded that behind every fortune is a loss of self or an injustice. Yes, some readers will be offended but Soriano dares to peel back the carefully coiffured veneer of society and in doing so reminds us that our greed, hypocrisy and ruthlessness will ultimately be our downfall. – BookViral

The American Epoch: Rebellion Against Man

An examination of twentieth century American history and culture at the most fundamental level in which they are shaped. The whole gamut of modern human activity, from economics and politics to mass murder, racism, and rock’n’roll is covered in this panoramic study. Not just history, then, but a psychological history of American civilization and everything it introduced into the world. This energized and controversial narrative brings the reader right to the present day and the most recent developments (and failings) in science and culture. The thirty chapters contain ninety rarely seen images.

BOOK REVIEW:

In this loose sequel to The Decline of Democratic Society in the New Age, Soriano delivers a fascinating look at twentieth century American history and culture “at the most fundamental levels in which they are shaped.” He ventures beyond politics and economics and brazenly contends that the continuing invasion of socialist thinking, not only in politics or economics but in the whole array of cultural evolutions, has contributed greatly to the demise of traditional Western paradigms. He argues that the economic, cultural, political, moral, technological transformations that the world has gone through (under American influence) in the new millennium have created a period of confusion. He grounds his arguments in portraits of twentieth-century Anglo-American class division, psychological histories of gun possession and random mass murders in America, and the effect of electronic media among others. Soriano’s arguments will raise eyebrows but ring true in context, despite his rigid criticism shading (at times) into cynicism. With its scholarly arguments, Soriano’s cutting analysis touches complex mainstream themes of racism and fascism among others and makes for a timely, frank discussion. With Soriano’s conversational, accessible prose, the book is easy to read. The inclusion of ninety stunning images adds to the intrigue of the narrative. With its arguments rooted in philosophy and history rather than in politics, accompanied by Soriano’s first-class writing, this volume will easily impress readers seeking to break out of their sociopolitical comfort zones. – *****(5 stars) The Prairies Book Review

TRUMP’S BORDER WALL- THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

Whatever Trump’s border wall may truly mean, whether it is just another piece of political exploitation to attract the support of a disgruntled population and win an election, or simply the masterpiece of a life marked by conspicuous megalomania, if it were to actually materialize it would no doubt be the central monument of the modern world. It’s sheer size, stretching thousands of miles from Atlantic to Pacific, guarantees it not just monumental status but historical status as well. The ostensible reason for this wall coming into existence- necessity- also qualifies it as monumental. In the ancient world, monuments arose more out of necessity than any cultural considerations. The alarms raised by ultraconservatives just months after Trump’s election, hurling accusations of deceit and betrayal due to the operation’s slow progress, attest to its necessity or at least to its political validity. These extreme politics (or one might even say “ancient politics”) did not exist in previous decades in America due to prosperity and comfort and are a strong indication of the economic reality that exists today outside of mass media propaganda.

What makes it almost certain that this wall will come into existence are the constant witch-hunts against Trump conducted by the liberal elites in the U.S. almost since the day he won the election. They have lived up infamously to the new stereotype that marks them as “liberal fascists”, openly intolerant of any power in America that does not serve their agendas. The latest travesty of an impeachment, devised once again to remove the people’s choice from his position almost guarantees that the Republican party will win the next election, with or without him (barring some unforeseen disaster). They could run Hitler’s clone as their next candidate and probably still win.

So now that we’ve established the probability that this wall will indeed happen, let’s consider some of the cultural, economic, and political factors that might affect its potential to actually survive in today’s world. Whether you like it or not, a giant wall crossing the entire continent does indeed qualify as an epic achievement and would  make the name of Trump an immortal one. Why? Buildings and places are what people remember and value the most about the past. Historical monuments usually arise out of necessity. That’s what makes them historical. After decades of putting up with what Eisenhauer referred to as the “wet back” problem, Mexicans in great multitudes violating American international sovereignty like it was some sort of joke, there is no doubt that the necessity for a great wall exists. In this case, the structure required is so vast that, if built effectively, it would surpass the conventional conception of what a monument is. One would be able to see it from outer space. It would be the American equivalent of the great pyramids, projecting America’s name not only into outer space but into eternity. Everyone still knows about the other two great walls of the world, thousands of years after they were built. The Roman Emperor Hadrian’s Wall,  separating England from Scotland, and the Great Wall of China.

Hadrian’s Wall, built 122 139 A.D.

Such a wall being built today could  transcend these others in its cultural and economic importance, if certain opportunities are taken advantage of. These involve the aesthetic nature of the wall. If built of steel, as cheaply as possible, it would be ugly and nobody would want to look at it. It probably would not even last very long, being subject to corrosion. There is also the  fact that such a wall would look inappropriate and even insane in today’s world, and therefore might provoke endless opposition from the left half of the American population. If it is made of glass, however, the cultural and economic potential of the wall increase greatly, not to mention its durability and status as an everlasting monument.

Not only does glass not corrode, it is also much stronger than steel or concrete. Even thick steel can be worked through with a torch. The cultural and economic benefits come from the aesthetic quality of a thick glass wall. It would be an amazing thing to see and people would probably come from all over the world to do so, if it was done right. Things could be  embedded in the wall, like American V-8 engines or skeletons painted in the colors of the Mexican flag. People would come not only to the American side but to the Mexican as well,, so it would benefit both countries economically. Americans, or anybody else in the world, could pay for tiny sections of the wall, to have family photos, plaques with their names on them, or whatever embedded into the wall for eternity. Companies could pay for permanent advertising space. This would greatly reduce the public expense of the project. Considering how much wall there would be, it might even pay for it entirely.

The tank walls of superaquariums, this one in Atlanta, are probably the closest thing currently extant to what a proper glass wall would be.

Sections of the wall could be tinted different colors to make it more beautiful. Concerts could be held at the wall. Fibre optic cables could run through it, illuminating it at night so that nobody walks or drives into it. The visual variety along its great length might attract multiple or day-long visits, creating a new economic zone along its continent-wide span. The potential for this thing to be an economic wonder of the modern world is there. The immense amount of glass involved in the construction alone would make many fortunes and create hundreds of lifelong jobs. It would also eliminate many jobs in the drug-trafficking business. If the whole thing proved to be an enormous humiliation for Mexico, the prettiness of it all, not to mention the economic benefits, might dispel some of the international tension.

The only problem I can think of unique to glass is the possible use of rubber suction devices to surmount the wall. Every design has weaknesses. Barbed wire can be grappled with rope or hooks and be covered with padding. The defensive advantages of glass, however , outweigh the problems. The main problem with all walls is that tunnels can be dug underneath them. You can see through glass walls. This makes tunnels a difficult proposition.

At night lights can be shone through glass. Laser light shines through glass largely unperturbed, so laser cannons could be used for the easy, pre-emptive repulsion of would be borderline offenders. This might sound extreme, but a zap from a laser is much more humane than a bullet. Lasers might also work as precision, long distance motion sensors. A sheet of laser light positioned vertically above the wall would easily span segments of it hundreds of miles long. This acts against the tactic of smearing the wall with mud, although this is not very likely in a desert environment anyway. Another solution to this would be to move the wall back a bit behind the border, so that anybody defacing it could be dealt with legally.

On a more positive note, with regard to psychology, the transparency of glass makes a colossal wall less offensive and exclusionary. People can still see what is on the other side. Apart from this, both the glass wall and lasers serve the idea of newness. It is 2019 after all. Without a doubt, glass is the way for any grandiose American enterprise in this part of the world. The only question is, with Mexico now long ranked as one of the top two fattest countries on earth, will it be a necessity for very much longer?

For those who think Equinox One is filled with exaggerated stereotyes or caricatures that serve only the function of satiric comedy and are unconnected to any reality that exists in modern Canada, the author here provides an excerpt from a Toronto urban newspaper.

This month, the Toronto Public Library faced an outpouring of criticism from across Toronto’s queer and literary communities after its board elected to move forward with an event featuring writer Meghan Murphy, who had previously been banned from Twitter for anti-trans remarks.

On Tuesday evening, hundreds of people gathered outside the event at the Palmerston branch to demonstrate against the event. . . The protest included call-and-response readings of work by trans writers (including Benaway, Catherine B.
